The Lion King

Las Vegas

Roars

Disney’s The Lion King makes its debut in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino with their Grand Opening on May 2 with a 7 PM performance only. Currently in its 12th year on Broadway, Disney’s The Lion King has been seen by more than 45 million people in 11 countries.

The Las Vegas production will join seven other companies as The Lion King continues to reign as one of the most popular shows around the world. New York, London, Hamburg, Paris, and Tokyo and Fukuoka as well as the North American

National Tour have won more than 70 major awards worldwide, including the Tony Award® and New York Drama Critics Award for Best Musical, the Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album and the Lawrence Olivier Awards for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design.

The Lion King was originally directed by Julie Taymor, who is the first woman to win a Tony Award® for Direction of a Musical. She is the director, costume designer, codesigner of the masks and puppets and wrote additional lyrics for The Lion King.

Taymor’s challenge was to take the

Disney animated film characters and bring to life three dimensional stage animals through texture, fibers, and wood. The results are a visually stunning savannah filled with giraffes, birds, and gazelles.

The score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from the animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice, additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer. The unforgettable score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s Oscar winning song “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and “Circle of Life.”
