Death Valley
Venture to one of the hottest places on earth, Death Valley. Certain times of the year,
temperatures reach well into the 100’s with the average yearly rainfall barely reaching 2 inches.
Death Valley is a place of wonder, as you can be standing in an area of extreme heat, and gaze up at the snow-covered mountains in the distance. The peak season is during the cooler fall months, but it is important to be prepared all year around. The elements are harsh; drinking plenty of water and wearing a hat will ensure a more pleasant visit.
Starting in October, a number of guided tours are available. Park Rangers walk you through different points of interest while sharing their knowledge of Death Valley. The tour
schedules change each week. It’s also possible to hike on your own. Trails range from easy to moderate and can take anywhere from a half hour to 3 hours.
While touring Death Valley, keep your eyes open for wildlife. You might think a place of such extreme dryness and heat would have no sign of life, but just the opposite is true. Death Valley is home to a variety of species of living creatures including different types of mammals, birds, and reptiles. Many, if not all of these creatures, are nocturnal and rise during evening hours to avoid the heat during the day. |
