Las Vegas Fun Facts

Being a 24-hour city, Las Vegas is always in the spotlight. Read on for a few fun facts that you may have not known about “Sin City.”

• A law was passed in 1910 that made gambling illegal in Las Vegas. Luckily, a couple decades later the Nevada Legislature approved a bill that legalized gambling in 1931.

• Betty Willis created the famous “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign in 1959. The sign is perhaps the most copied icon of Las Vegas, as it was never copyrighted.

• The Eiffel Tower outside of the Paris hotel is half the size of the original in Paris, France.

• Wayne Newton owns a home in the Las Vegas area, and it was a real location for the film “Vegas Vacation.”

• The Riviera was the first high- rise on the Las Vegas Strip, standing 9 stories high.

• The Stratosphere Hotel and Tower, at more than 1,100 feet, is the tallest building west
  of the Mississippi and the fifth tallest building in the United States.

• Chocolate lovers will want to pay a visit to the largest chocolate fountain in the world. The Jean-Philippe Pâtisserie, in the Bellagio, is home to the 27-foot chocolate fountain with flowing dark, milk, and white melted chocolate.
