When visiting Las Vegas, schedule some time to take advantage of one of the many places around the city that make for a great day trip. Less than an hour away from the Las Vegas Strip, you will find Black Canyon located in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
Black Canyon was formed from the Colorado River and lies below the Hoover Dam. The region consists of steep canyons, sandy beaches, and secluded coves. There are a number of activities offered at Black Canyon. Row through the waters on a kayak down to Willow Beach and take in the natural scenery. Tours are also available where passengers sit in large motorized rafts and drift down the Colorado River. Keep your eyes open for wildlife while in Black Canyon. Desert bighorn sheep, hawks, and lizards have been spotted by visitors while hiking and kayaking.
Soak in one of the many natural hot springs found along the side canyons. The hot springs remain at a consistent temperature and are enjoyable year-round. A soak in a hot spring is a great way to end a day of hiking, but there are a couple of things to remember.
Do not use any kind of soap or shampoo in the springs because there are often endangered species of fish found in the waters. Anything left behind after a visit to the springs may be dangerous for future swimmers, especially glass containers. A hot spring, while crystal clear, is still a natural body of water and may contain organisms detrimental to swimmers. For this reason, swimmers should never submerge their heads. While the springs are ideal year-round, soaks in the summer should be limited due to the hot temperatures.
