A man-made wonder, the Hoover Dam was constructed during The Depression from 1931 to 1936 and was completed two years ahead of schedule. Construction costs were approximately $165 million. Originally referred to as Boulder Dam, it was later named after President Herbert Hoover.
Hoover Dam, located on the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada, stops flash floods coming from the Colorado River. This allows farmers to harvest crops all year round in what is considered the driest location in the United States. Hoover Dam also serves as a power source, generating enough power for 1.3 million people per year.
A trip to Las Vegas wouldn’t be complete without a tour of the Hoover Dam. It is the perfect day trip the whole family can enjoy. There are many ways to tour the dam. Tours range in price and duration. All day package tours are available and most have hotel pick up and drop off, some even including dinner. For those who like to go at their own pace, walking the dam is the best and least expensive option. The observation deck provides gorgeous views of Lake Mead and the Colorado River.
