Outside the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas lies Zion, a geologically stunning national park. Zion falls at the crossroads of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert provinces. The name means refuge or sanctuary in Hebrew, and within the massive stone structures, a sanctuary is exactly what you will find. The 229 square miles of deep canyons and towering cliffs are a hiking lovers dream. Varying levels of hiking trails are offered, from a light stroll to a challenging adventure.
A number of species of mammals, reptiles, and over 200 species of birds thrive in Zion. Bald Eagles, Falcons, bats, and rabbits are just some of the creatures you may run into. If bird-watching is your favorite past time, Natural History Observation Cards are available at visitor centers or entrance stations.
There is a lot of history throughout the twist and turns of the caves and canyons in Zion. The first sign of human interaction date back almost 7,000 years ago. Evidence from the villages or “pueblos” still exists in Zion. Carvings, drawings, and even pieces of tools and pottery remain today.
